General Questions:

  • Can I submit a story or story idea to the news staff?
    • Yes! We welcome anyone to submit a story or story idea. All stories/ideas go through our editors who then determine if and when they will be published. This does not guarantee that your story will be published on The Greyhound Howl, but we will make every effort to publish what we can.
  • How do I report an error?
    • We apologize in advance for any errors in print or online publications put our by our student press. If you have a correction to report, please fill out the form in our Main Menu under ABOUT/REPORT AN ERROR.
  • How can I join the Journalism program?
    • Journalism is offered in multiple semesters beginning with Journalism I all the way to Journalism 4. Journalism 3 and 4 are honors courses that can be taken multiple times.
    • Students who are interested in media and news, photography, writing, reporting, etc. should consider the benefits of being part of the Journalism program.
  • What do Journalism students do?
    • Journalists research, write, edit, proofread and file news stories, features, and articles. Their pieces are used on television and radio or within magazines, journals, and newspapers, in print and online.
    • SHS Journalism students design, create, research, conduct, and present. There are many different jobs or roles involved in publications and productions. Students get the opportunity to experience each of these roles while figuring out what area they enjoy most. Journalism students serve as voices for students and they are the creators behind the yearbook.
  • Why should I register for Journalism?
    • Journalism offers many benefits and opportunities, as well as, a host of useful skills in areas like journalism, business, technology, social media, and life.

Yearbook Questions:

  • How do I purchase a yearbook?
    • Our yearbooks are published by Jostens’. All orders go through Jostens’ online cart system. You can visit www.jostens.com and search for Statesville High or click here.
  • Is it too late to order a yearbook?
    • Yearbook sales typically run through the end of March/early April. Students/parents are encouraged to order early (typically in the fall).
  • How much do yearbooks cost?
    • Yearbooks start at $65. As time passes, the price increases. This is why we encourage folks to purchase early. An early purchase also guarantees you get your book and you do not miss the deadline for ordering. The final order price goes up to $80 just before the cutoff date.   • Why should I purchase a yearbook?
    • Tradition. Tradition. Tradition…and memories!
    • Yearbooks are a tradition that goes all the way back to the 1600s. Pictures didn’t come into play until the 1820s. The earliest published yearbook dates back to 1806 by Yale University.
    • Yearbooks serve as legal and historical documents. The information found in yearbooks represents the events of any given year, locally, and sometimes nationally.
    • The Trail (SHS Yearbook) has been in existence since at least 1916. It was originally called a “magazine.” The yearbook has been a longstanding tradition and incredible source of pride for Statesville alumni, current students, the school itself, and the city.
  • Will I be in the yearbook?
    • We hope so! Our Journalism Staff makes every attempt to get as many pictures of students as possible. They also attend events, conduct interviews, and collect information for stories. Your participation definitely increases your chances of being in the yearbook & the news!
  • What if I don’t like my yearbook photo?
    • Your fall picture is the final image that will be used in the portrait section of the yearbook.
    • Strawbridge Studios offers make-up dates when you can possibly retake your photo if there is space available. This is not a guarantee that you will be able to use a different image but we will try if possible.
  • Can I submit pictures for the yearbook?
    • Absolutely! If you would like to submit photos for consideration, you can upload them to our shared Google Drive.

School Picture Questions:

  • When do I have my picture made?
    • You can find this information in the menu under FAQs/School Portraits. This information is updated with the current school year dates. Any changes in dates or other picture information will be updated immediately.
  • How do I get a Student ID card?
    • You MUST have your picture taken at one of the fall picture dates offered. We recommend you make it a priority to have your picture taken on the first available date to ensure you get your ID card back early. If you miss the fall picture dates, you WILL NOT receive a Student ID and your photo will not be in the yearbook.
  • Can I choose which image is used for my yearbook picture?
    • The short answer is NO.
    • Your fall picture is the final image that will be used in the portrait section of the yearbook.
