The Iredell-Statesville School Board met for a called emergency meeting on July 28th, 2021, to discuss mask wearing for the 2021-22 school year. Governor Roy Cooper stated he would no longer mandate masks; that decision would be left up to local school boards. The I-SS School Board voted unanimously to make masks optional for staff and students. The School Board did stress that this may be revisited or change depending on positive cases.

Several solutions to positive cases were mentioned, such as the idea of masking specific classrooms or schools in the case of increased positive Covid cases. Most surrounding counties have also opted to allow masks to be optional. Larger districts like Forsyth County and Mecklenburg County have voted to make masks mandatory for all staff and students. This continues to be a hot topic across the country. Based on CDC recommendations, everyone is encouraged to wear a mask in public whether they are vaccinated or not. This recommendation allows citizens the freedom to choose for themselves if they prefer to wear a mask or not.
